German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Tuesday that his government would “not currently” recognize a Palestinian state, stating that such a move is “not the right step” at this moment.

Merz made the remarks during a joint press conference with Jordan’s King Abdullah at the Berlin Chancellery.

He also announced that two German aircraft may begin aid airdrop missions to Gaza from Jordan, describing the effort as a “small but important signal” of humanitarian support amid the ongoing crisis.

The Chancellor’s comments come amid renewed debate in Europe over the timing and implications of recognising Palestinian statehood.
