Heavy rains have intensified in Beijing and surrounding provinces in northern China, triggering flash floods, landslides, and the evacuation of more than 4,000 people, according to local authorities.

The Miyun district, a northwestern suburb of Beijing, has been particularly hard-hit, with torrential rainfall causing severe flash floods and landslides. Several villages have been affected, and emergency crews are working to prevent further casualties and damage.

Northern China, typically drier, has seen record-breaking rainfall in recent years, exposing even densely populated urban areas like Beijing to increased flood risk.

Experts say the surge in extreme weather is linked to global warming and changing East Asian monsoon patterns, which have disrupted agriculture, transport, and industry in the world’s second-largest economy.

The government has urged residents to remain on alert as rains continue across the region.
