Thailand and Cambodia were drawn into their deadliest military confrontation in more than a decade on Thursday, leaving at least 12 dead and raising alarms across Southeast Asia. The renewed hostilities erupted along the long-disputed Emerald Triangle border zone — where the frontiers of Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos converge.
The two nations exchanged heavy fire involving tanks, artillery, and ground troops in a fierce escalation of a decades-old territorial dispute. Cambodian forces reportedly launched rockets and artillery shells into Thai territory early Thursday morning, prompting an immediate and forceful response from the Thai military.
In retaliation, Thai forces scrambled F-16 fighter jets to carry out targeted airstrikes. Thai foreign ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura confirmed that the Cambodian attacks had struck both military and civilian areas, vowing a “measured but firm” response.
Following the clashes, Thai authorities took swift security measures. Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri announced the closure
of all border checkpoints with Cambodia, raising border alert levels to Level Four — the highest in Thailand’s system. This level involves a complete shutdown of civilian and commercial crossings.
This is not the first time the Emerald Triangle dispute has turned violent. Deadly incidents were previously reported over 15 years ago and again as recently as May 2025, when a Cambodian soldier was killed during a border skirmish.
The latest conflict has drawn international concern. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for restraint and urged both Thailand and Cambodia to return to the negotiating table immediately. “Peaceful dialogue must prevail,” he said, stressing that Southeast Asia cannot afford further instability.
As tensions simmer, diplomatic observers warn of wider regional implications if the standoff is not resolved quickly. Efforts are now underway behind the scenes to initiate emergency talks between the two nations under ASEAN’s peace framework.
