At the conclusion of a key National Industry Council meeting, French Trade Minister Marc Ferracci called on the European Union to adopt a firmer stance in its tariff negotiations with the Trump administration, which is threatening to impose 30% customs surcharges.

“Tariffs at the level announced by the US administration, i.e. 30%, would have absolutely dramatic consequences for the entire value chain, which is highly integrated,” Ferracci said. “Some industries have warned us of a mortal risk — I use the term that was used — if 30% customs duties were to be applied.”

Ferracci emphasized that while Europe must remain open to negotiation, it must also show firmness in defending its economic interests.
