EAM Jaishankar to attend SCO foreign ministers’ meeting in China

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will attend Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ meeting at Tianjin city in China today. Dr Jaishankar arrived in Beijing yesterday on a two-day visit to China. The Foreign Ministers will exchange views on SCO cooperation in various fields and major international and regional issues.

The SCO grouping comprises 10 member states – India, China, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus. China is the current chair of the SCO and is hosting the meetings of the grouping in that capacity. Dr Jaishankar is also expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the SCO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Dr. Jaishankar held bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing yesterday. External Affairs Minister  underlined the need for cooperation on trans-border rivers, including resumption of provision of hydrological data by the Chinese side. He also took up restrictive trade measures and roadblocks to economic cooperation.

The External Affairs Minister highlighted the positive impact of peace and tranquility in the border for a smooth development in bilateral relations.

Delivering the opening remarks during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing, Dr. Jaishankar said about the need for a far-seeing approach to bilateral ties and building a stable & constructive relationship.

He also addressed aspects related to the border, normalizing people-to-people exchanges and avoiding restrictive trade measures & roadblocks. Hesaid, “Confident that on the foundation of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity, ties can develop along a positive trajectory.”

Dr Jaishankar also appreciated the Chinese side’s cooperation for the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.
