People in São Polo gathered for a demonstration in support of Brazil’s economic policies. But it took a sharp turn after protesters reacted angrily to a new U.S. tariff policy. The crowd, initially gathered to back a proposed tax on high-income earners, turned their attention to former U.S. President Donald Trump following his announcement of a 50% tariff on Brazilian products.
The demonstration saw participation from members and supporters of Brazil’s ruling Workers’ Party, who had come bearing flags and signs in support of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. However, the mood shifted dramatically after the tariff news broke. Protesters set ablaze an effigy of Trump along with a U.S. flag, symbolizing their frustration and anger.
Many demonstrators viewed the U.S. move as a direct affront to Brazil’s sovereignty and economic stability. The sudden policy shift sparked widespread condemnation and transformed the tone of the event from domestic economic discourse to anti-American sentiment.
