Deadly floods in central Texas have claimed at least 119 lives, with over 160 people still missing.

Rescue workers continue to search through piles of muddy debris left by the July 4 floods, as Governor Greg Abbott ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims.

The majority of fatalities and ongoing search efforts are focused in Kerr County and its county seat, Kerrville, which became a disaster zone following torrential rains last Friday.

The disaster has brought renewed attention to the effectiveness of the country’s emergency response system.

Governor Abbott, who recently toured the affected areas, announced that the state’s emergency alert system will be reviewed during a special legislative session later this month.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Texas on Friday to assess the damage and meet with local officials.
