U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Kuala Lumpur Today morning to participate in the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared a post on X and wrote, “In Kuala Lumpur for meetings with my ASEAN nation counterparts. A strong U.S.-ASEAN partnership is in our best interest, and we intend to make sure it keeps delivering results for America and our allies.”
During his visit, Rubio will attend a post-ministerial conference and a meeting of East Asian foreign ministers.
This is Rubio’s first visit to Asia since taking office, where he aims to reassure ASEAN partners that the region remains a priority for Washington.
Rubio is also scheduled to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and hold trilateral talks with counterparts from the Philippines and Japan.
In addition, Rubio will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the ASEAN meetings. The two leaders are set to meet on Thursday, as the U.S. prepares to send additional weapons to Ukraine.
This will be the second in-person meeting between Rubio and Lavrov, as Russia continues its assault on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
