Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Namibia on a state visit at the invitation of Vice President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. The visit aimed to deepen bilateral cooperation between India and Namibia across multiple sectors including natural resources, healthcare, digital payments, and trade.
In a press briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs, Secretary (Economic Relations) Dammu Ravi outlined key areas of cooperation discussed during the visit.
He said India and Namibia focused on collaboration in critical minerals such as diamonds, lithium, copper, cobalt, and graphite, which are vital for India’s industrial and manufacturing sectors. This partnership aims to leverage Namibia’s rich natural resources for mutual benefit.
Dammu Ravi also highlighted talks on healthcare cooperation, including the possibility of introducing India’s Jan Aushadhi affordable medicine initiative in Namibia. The two countries discussed direct sourcing of medicines from India to support Namibia’s healthcare needs.
Digital payments cooperation is a major breakthrough, he said. Namibia is the first country to sign a licensing agreement with India’s National Payments Corporation (NPCI) and the Namibian Central Bank to implement the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), enabling real-time payments and boosting financial inclusion.
On security and global issues,Secretary Dammu Ravi noted that both nations condemned terrorism in all forms. Namibia expressed solidarity with India following the April Pahalgam terrorist attack. Discussions also covered reforming multilateral institutions and Namibia’s joining the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and the global biofuel alliance.
