India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was bestowed with Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross. In a function in Brasilia, President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva presented the award to the Indian Prime Minister. This is Brazil’s highest honor which is awarded exclusively to foreign nationals as a symbol of friendship and respect.

It was created in 1822 by Emperor Pedro I to mark Brazil’s independence and was reestablished as a republican order in 1932 by President Getúlio Vargas.

The decoration features a white star bearing the Southern Cross constellation—an important national symbol—framed by coffee and tobacco branches, which represent Brazil’s heritage. With this honour, PM Modi now has been bestowed a total of 26 such global recognition.
