South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder posted the fifth-highest individual score in Test cricket history in the second Test against Zimbabwe. He scored an unbeaten 367 off 334 deliveries.
The total marked the highest ever for the Proteas in the longest format of the game. The monumental knock included a 49 fours and four maximums.
The right-handed batter stands only behind Brian Lara, Matthew Hayden and Mahela Jayawardena among the highest individual scorers in Men’s Tests.
Coming in to bat at number three on the opening day of the Test, the Proteas all-rounder produced a titanic effort with the bat to become the first batter to score a triple hundred on Test captaincy debut.
The knock was the second quickest triple hundred in the history of the format (297), behind only Virender Sehwag, who had got past the milestone off 278 deliveries against South Africa in Chennai back in 2008.
Mulder decided not to chasing the record and instead opted to declare the Proteas first innings at 626/5, leaving Lara’s record for the highest score in Test cricket to remain.
Mulder clarified the reasons behind his decision when speaking at stumps on the second day.
“You never know what is destined for me, but Brian Lara keeping that record (of the highest score in Tests) is exactly the way it should be” Mulder said to Shaun Pollock in the post-match interview, revealing the reason behind the declaration.
