Chief Justice of India B R Gavai today addressed a commemorative event at Government Law College, Mumbai, marking 90 years of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s association with the historic institution.
Speaking at the event titled ‘Saluting Granite Legacy: 90 Years of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’, Justice Gavai recalled the college’s proud legacy. He noted that the institution has produced six Chief Justices of India and several High Court Chief Justices.
Reflecting on the college’s unique place in judicial history, CJI Gavai praised its academic contributions and vibrant culture. He expressed gratitude for the warm reception, which included poetic tributes, sketches, and personal felicitations.
Marking the occasion, Justice Gavai unveiled a commemorative plaque in honour of Dr. Ambedkar, who served as both professor and principal of the college during the early 20th century.
Describing Dr. Ambedkar as a “multifaceted genius,” the Chief Justice hailed him as a towering figure – jurist, economist, educator – whose legacy continues to inspire generations of Indians.
Justice Gavai said he felt deeply privileged to visit places shaped by Ambedkar’s life and work. He called the occasion a reminder of Ambedkar’s intellectual depth and enduring impact on Indian society.
Concluding his speech, Chief Justice B R Gavai Gavai expressed optimism for India’s future, invoking the spirit of Amrit Kaal and the march toward the centenary of independence in 2047, calling it a shared national journey.
