Ferry Sinks Near Bali, 5 Dead, Dozens Feared Missing

A ferry carrying 65 people sank near Bali, Indonesia leaving 5 dead and many missing. Indonesian rescuers were working against rough seas on Thursday in a race to locate missing persons after a ferry accident left five people dead and many unaccounted for.

The vessel, KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, went down roughly 30 minutes after departing from Banyuwangi port in East Java province late Wednesday, en route to Bali.

According to the national agency, the ferry had 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and was transporting 22 vehicles. So far, 35 people have been rescued, while the search continues for those still missing, the East Java rescue agency reported.

Indonesia’s transport ministry stated the ferry was authorized to carry up to 67 people and 25 vehicles.
