Heavy rainfall has caused landslides and road washouts, blocking the Yamunotri National Highway at several points between Silai Band and Ojari. In Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, work is underway on a war footing to restore the highway as quickly as possible. Heavy machinery is being deployed to carry out the operations.
The District Magistrate remains stationed in disaster-affected areas to oversee relief efforts and restoration work.
The National Highway is still not open for vehicular movement, but with the help of security personnel, pilgrims stranded on the Yamunotri side are being evacuated on foot. Around 50 percent of the pilgrims have been rescued and moved to safe locations.
All departmental teams deployed on-site have been instructed to carry out their duties with full sensitivity and alertness.
