The White House has signaled it may extend the upcoming 09 July deadline for implementing higher tariffs on imports from multiple countries, as international trade negotiations continue.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt downplayed the rigidity of the deadline, stating that President Biden retains the authority to negotiate or impose reciprocal tariff rates in the interest of American workers.

“The deadline is not critical,” Leavitt told reporters. “The president can simply provide these countries with a deal if they refuse to make us one by the deadline. That means he can pick a reciprocal tariff rate that he believes is advantageous for the United States and for the American worker — and he will continue to do that.”

Leavitt added that U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has been actively engaged in discussions with key trading partners. “I speak to him frequently. He’s working very hard, and he has had good and productive discussions with many of our key trading partners,” she said.
