Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology at the (IMD) India Meteorological Department, has been honoured with the prestigious United Nations Sasakawa Award 2025 for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The global award celebrates exceptional leadership of Mohapatra and India’s significant contributions in building a disaster-resilient future through science, innovation, and preparedness.

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General Celeste Saulo has expressed gratitude to Dr. Mohapatra, for winning the United Nations Sasakawa Award-2025 for Disaster Risk Reduction!

In the appreciation letter she wrote, “I am absolutely thrilled that my good friend Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director-General of the India Meteorological Department has won one of the world’s top disaster risk reduction awards in recognition of his exceptional contributions to tropical cyclone forecasting and warning systems.

He received the prestigious United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction at a lively ceremony last night at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.”

In India Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra is widely known as the Cyclone Man! In the World Meteorological Organization community, he is known for his outstanding leadership and his tireless advocacy for Early Warnings For All. India has greatly advanced the accuracy and effectiveness of tropical cyclone prediction systems, saving countless lives through early warning and coordinated preparedness efforts.
