Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday announced ₹10 lakh compensation for families of 11 people killed in a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a felicitation ceremony was being held for IPL 2025 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The tragedy unfolded before the start of the event as an uncontrollable crowd, estimated at over two lakh, overwhelmed the stadium’s 35,000-capacity. Massive surges at the entry gates triggered chaos, leading to a deadly stampede that left 47 others injured.

Addressing a press conference, Siddaramaiah said the injured are being treated at Bowring and Vaidehi hospitals, with medical expenses fully covered by the government. He added that most of the victims were young fans who had gathered to celebrate RCB’s historic title win.

“This is a heartbreaking incident. A celebration has turned into mourning. I visited the hospitals and spoke with doctors. All injured persons are out of danger, but the loss of young lives has deeply saddened me,” the Chief Minister said.

Authorities were caught off guard by the turnout, he admitted. “We expected crowds slightly beyond stadium capacity, but over two to three lakh people arrived, including one lakh in front of Vidhana Soudha,” Siddaramaiah said, calling the tragedy entirely unforeseen.

The Chief Minister also announced a magisterial inquiry into the incident and directed officials to submit a detailed report within 15 days. “Action will be taken against anyone found responsible for lapses in security or crowd management,” he stated.

When asked if the government bore responsibility for inadequate preparations, Siddaramaiah said the probe would establish the facts. “No one expected such a massive turnout. I am not giving a clean chit. The inquiry will reveal the truth,” he added.
