In Sikkim, the evacuation process at Lachen and Chaten has yet to start due to inclement weather.
The IAF helicopter couldn’t operate because of bad weather. However, official sources said that the IAF chopper and NDRF teams are exploring all possible options to evacuate the stranded passengers in Mangan district. Yesterday, 34 persons were safely rescued by the IAF and NDRF teams.
According to the District Collector of Mangan, around 130 tourists are still stranded at Lachen. All the stranded tourists are safe and staying in their hotels. However, mobile communication has been disrupted at Lachen, but communication is ongoing through NDRF’s satellite phones.
Ministry of Defence has stated the information sharing on X:
‘In the wake of a devastating landslide in North Sikkim, the Indian Army is leading relentless search and rescue operations under extreme weather and hazardous terrain. Lachen village, completely cut off, has been reached on foot, with 113 stranded tourists located—30 of them, including foreign nationals, airlifted on 3 June.”

Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur visited Singhtam in Gangtok district on Tuesday to monitor the situation. The Governor urged local people to remain vigilant and instructed the administration to provide all necessary support.
Meanwhile, the tourism department has issued an advisory for tourists stating that roads leading to Lachen and Lachung are temporarily closed due to landslides, but there are no issues in visiting other places in Sikkim.
