Renowned Tabla-Maestro Zakir Hussain passed away in San Francisco, USA at the age of 73. His family confirmed the news on Monday. Zakir Hussain was getting treatment as he was having complications in health. Zakir Hussain’s Manager Nirmala Bachani said.
Zakir Hussain was recognised with prestigious Awards like Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2023 for his contribution in the field of Music .
Zakir Hussain born on 9 March 1951, was an Indian tabla player, composer, percussionist, music producer and film actor. He was the eldest son of tabla player Alla Rakha, and was widely considered as one of the greatest tabla players.
Zakir Hussain was awarded the Govt of India’s Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1990, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, Ratna Sadsya in 2018. In 1999, he was awarded the United States National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship, the highest award given to traditional artists and musicians. Hussain has received 4 Grammy Awards.
Zakir Hussain born in Mumbai, India and attended St. Michael’s High School in Mahim and graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. Hussain was a founding member of Bill Laswell’s world music supergroup Tabla Beat Science. Hussain was invited by President Obama for the International Jazz Day 2016 All-Star Global Concert at the White House, in 2016.
