Cancer is deadly and day by day it is increasing rapidly. India observes National Cancer Awareness Day on Nov 7 every year. NewzVille Network (NVN) talks to Associate Professor and HOD, Shalya Tantra of Government Asthang Ayurveda College, Indore on the various aspects like Cause, Cure and Prevention of Cancer.
NVN: Doctor, Welcome to NewzVille Network on a very sensitive topic, Cancer. First of all let us know What is the importance of National Cancer Awareness Day and when it started in India?
Dr Akhlesh Bhargava: Thanks to NewzVille Network for having me on a topic which is very much needed to make people aware. Cancer is spreading rapidly in our society today and is being found in abundance in people of all ages. If there is any number of deaths in India after heart diseases then it is cancer. Sorry to say the situation getting worse, we have to remain alert.
Every year 88 lakh people die from cancer all over the world and about 8% of it is in India. According to the Cancer Registry Programme, 1300 people die every day from cancer in India. WHO has said in the global report about India that one in every 10 people is likely to get cancer in the coming time and one in 15 will die. According to a study published by the Journal of Global Oncology, the number of deaths in India is double that of developed countries, that is, if 7 out of 10 cancer patients die in India, it is only 3 or 4 in developed countries. The situation is alarming.
The reason for this is the lack of awareness about cancer in India, due to which cancer is detected late, therefore, if symptoms of cancer-like disease appear, one should immediately contact the doctor.
National Cancer Awareness Day was started by the former Health Minister of India, Dr. Harsh Vardhan back in September 2014. November 07 is the birthday of the famous scientist Madame Curie, who discovered radium and polonium and with its invention, nuclear energy and radio therapy are used for treatment in cancer patients. So this very day India observes as National Cancer Awareness Day and we should take part to create awareness among the mass.
NVN: What should somebody do to protect himself/herself from Cancer?
Dr Akhlesh Bhargava: I will give full length focus on it because the question is simple but it needs a long explanatory answer. So I am saying it point by point like this:
1. As much as possible, organic materials should be used, that is, in their cultivation and use, there is no excessive use of pesticides.
2. Minimize the use of substances like beedi, cigarette, tobacco, alcohol etc. Smoking with alcohol doubles the chances of cancer, it increases the chances of mouth, liver and lung cancer.
3. Minimize the use of salt, excessive use of salt can cause damage to the alimentary canal, and may cause stomach cancer. Processed foods like pickles, namkeen, sauces contain more salt.
4. Do not consume red meat, it increases the chances of colon cancer.
5. Control your weight, exercise daily, Obesity increases the chances of getting breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, gall bladder cancer.
6. Do not eat hot food in plastic utensils, bisphenol, a chemical is found in plastic which can distort the structures of cells.
7. Get enough sleep, at least 8 hours.
8. Get yourself screened for cancer, don’t be afraid. Women should self-examine their breasts after menstruation every month. If there is excessive bleeding or pain during menstruation, get it checked once.
9. Do not take mental stress, it causes cancer.
10. Use alkaline substances as much as possible, Because increased acidity in the body causes cancer, the pH of cancer cells is acidic.
11. If you feel any lump in the breast, contact the doctor.
12. Do not consume canned food, because Bisphenol Sodium is used in it to keep it safe for a long time. It contains Omega 6 which is the cause of cancer.
13. Do not eat food after keeping it on newspaper. It contains dye alcohol and isobutyl phthalate which is the cause of cancer.
14. The artificial color added to food and sweets is also cause of cancer. It causes cancer of eyes, liver, kidney and throat.
15. Do not use oil by heating it again and again, the free radicals formed at its smoke point are toxic, which is the cause of cancer.
16. Radiation emanating from mobile towers around houses is a dangerous cause of cancer.
17. Excessive use of mobile phones can also cause radiation.
NVN: How Cancer be controlled , I mean To control Cancer what should be done for public awareness.
Dr Akhlesh Bhargava: To control cancer, a de-addiction campaign is necessary because the main cause of mouth, tongue and throat cancer is tobacco and gutkha and the main cause of lung cancer is smoking. It is necessary today.
So that we tell people and they do not start taking drugs, for this, the patients coming to the hospital are given information about the diseases caused by them, pamphlets were distributed and boards have also been made to be put up in all the clinics of Indore and those who Videos of people who have quit drug addiction are made and shown to the people and The public is also being made aware through media.
NVN: Dr you told earlier Breast Cancer is growing rapidly, what will be your suggestion to minimize it?
Dr Akhlesh Bhargava: Considering the seriousness of breast cancer in women, the project of Government Ashtanga Ayurveda College and Hospital, AYUSH Department “Breast Cancer Awareness and Early Diagnosis” project has been started. Women been informed about breast self-examination on silicone breast model, testing of women, Women are being provided Narayani Survey Card after filling their information in the form.
NVN: Can you tell us what are the different types of Cancer exist?
Dr Akhlesh Bhargava: More than 100 types of cancer are found in the body, Genes in the nucleus located in all the cells of our body contain a specific sequence of proteins that give specific instructions to the body cells to function. Genes are a specific sequence of proteins in the cells of our body that we receive from our parents. It happens, Due to some reasons like tobacco, alcohol, smoking, genetic reasons, obesity, consumption of chemical substances, consumption of contaminated water, contaminated environment, virus and many other reasons, due to mutation i.e. change in the genes of the body, the cells of the body start getting wrong messages. Is And the cells of the body become uncontrolled during division. And it forms a lump or tumor in the body, if it is not treated on time, then it starts going to other places of the body through blood and lymph, which we call metastasis or spread of defects.
NVN: How do you see Curing Cancer in Ayurveda and give us a brief idea of Cancer in Ayurveda.
Dr Akhlesh Bhargava: In Ayurveda, thousands of years ago, the causes, symptoms and treatment of cancer i.e. cancer are described in Sushruta Samhita. According to Ayurveda, due to our wrong eating habits and distorted lifestyle, imbalance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas arise in the cells of the body. And these distorted defects enter the body’s metals, juice, blood, flesh, fat, bones, marrow and Venus and cause cancer there. Therefore, in Ayurveda, cancer is eliminated by bringing these doshas into balance and purifying the metals. Medicines in Ayurveda have an effect on the gene level.
NVN: Why Patients are showing their Confidence level for consulting Ayurveda doctors to treat cancer?
Dr Akhlesh Bhargava: Cancer patients and their families always look for available, affordable, effective and side-effect free treatment for the patient. At Government Ashtanga Ayurved College, Lokmanya Nagar, Indore, Cancer patients are treated in with Ayurvedic medicines like organic turmeric, Tulsi, Sadabahar, Guggulu, Shilajit, Punarnava, Black Tulsi, Drumstick and many other medicines.
Cancer patients can come here and get treatment and counselling, we also make cancer patients talk to those patients who are now completely cured of cancer, this increases the confidence of the patients.
As this disease weakens the patient at all levels – physical, mental, economic and social, hence We help the patient at all levels in the hospital. A cancer patient needs mental strength, and we can help in this to fight the disease and win. Every effort is made to make sure the patient get treated at utmost care.
Around 100 patients come to us every month for treatment, and almost the same number of patients from Indore and outside Indore take treatment and consultation through phone, here we provide treatment to the patients through Ayurvedic medicines. Here, Sattvajaya treatment of the patient’s mind and soul is done so that the patient’s mind becomes strong and the disease can be cured. We inform the patient and family about the disease and its treatment and Always remain in touch with them through phone so that the patient does not face any kind of problem. Here, the patient’s cancer wound is treated by bandaging it with a medicine made from cow ghee.
NVN: Any Chances of recurrence of Cancer? If yes, then how important to remain vigilant for that ?
Dr Akhlesh Bhargava: Now-a-days it is being seen in the patients that even after the cancer is completely cured, there is a possibility of recurrence after some time, such patients have also come before us. Believe that Some defects in the body remain dormant and after getting favorable conditions, they give rise to the disease again. Therefore, even after cancer is gone, patients need to take steps to balance those defects or remove them from the body.
In case of cancer in old age, the immunity of the patient decreases and many times the doctor advises to take them home and provide services at home. So use of Ayurvedic medicines is very beneficial at this time because the patient can take these medicines easily, and they do not have any adverse effect on the body.
