India will commemorate Iron Man Sardar Patel’s 150th birth anniversary with a two-year-long nationwide celebration

Patel played a key role in integrating 560 princely states into the Union of India

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah has announced that the Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, will commemorate 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel with a two-year-long nationwide celebration from 2024 to 2026.

 

Announcing about the decision of celebration in a post on X platform, Union Home Minister  wrote “Sardar Patel Ji’s enduring legacy as the visionary behind the establishment of one of the world’s most robust democracies and his pivotal role in unifying India from Kashmir to Lakshadweep remains indelible. To honor his monumental contributions, the government of India, under the leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, will commemorate his 150th birth anniversary with a two-year-long nationwide celebration from 2024 to 2026. This celebration will serve as a testament to his remarkable achievements and the spirit of unity that he epitomized.”

National Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, was first celebrated in India on October 31, 2014. The day was introduced by the Government of India to honor the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a founding father of India and the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. Patel played a key role in integrating 560 princely states into the Union of India.

The day is celebrated to promote national integration, unity, and integrity, and to convey the importance of unity. It is celebrated with a variety of events, including pledge-taking ceremonies, march pasts by the police, cultural activities like essay writing, speech reciting, quiz competitions, paintings, and art making competitions.
The first National Unity Day event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi with the theme “Run For Unity”.
